Generations are socially constructed categories that define and define artistic practices. When this concept is used in the discourse by hegemonic agents of the artistic field, it is possible to demonstrate value parameters of art that are claimed to be established as legitimate. This article studies the operational use of the concept of ‘generation’ in the discursivity produced and disseminated by the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires (Mamba) and the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (Malba) with the purpose of explaining the proposed guidelines regarding the Argentine artistic scene in the beginning of the 21st century.
