Motherhood: a peripherical story

In art history and literature, women’s recognition came late. Traditionally in history man has been regarded as the main creative subject, but female characters have been marginalized -with few exceptions though-. This lack of recognition took a turn in the second half of the twentieth century thanks to feminist movements that placed on the discussion table, previously absent aspects, which allowed new issues to be discussed. Amongst various topics addressed, the usual image of the concept of motherhood has broken up, as well. The concept of mother, represented throughout history is a figure of sacrifice and virtue, and has these meanings due to frozen debates at the dawn of Modernity. However, new feminist narratives have managed to question the usual representations by showing new voices and other places of enunciation.
