Abstract

Many times I have been asked what is the relationship between the landscape and the dancers in The Minor Choirs and always the most elementary answer is the one of greater precision: both are made of the same world. The characters come from three places: Alto Hospicio, in Chile, and El Alto and Oruro, in Bolivia. In the Chilean case, the portrayed are dancers of the La Tirana festival, a celebration related to the Virgen del Carmen. In the Bolivian festival, they are carnival dancers who, like in the rest of the Catholic world, are celebrated throughout that country at the end of February.

Author Biography

Demian Schopf, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso

Demian Schopf, (Frankfurt am Main, Alemania, 1975). Vive y trabaja en Santiago de Chile. Es Licenciado en Bellas Artes por la Universidad Arcis, Magíster en Artes por la Universidad de Chile y Doctor en Filosofía con mención en Estética y Teoría del Arte en la misma casa de estudios. Es docente en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile. Ha expuesto sus obras en 12 exposiciones individuales en museos y galerías en Chile y en el exterior. Destacan: “La Revolución Silenciosa” (2002) Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires (ICI) y en el Museo del Barro, Asunción, Paraguay, “Máquina Cóndor” (2006), Galería Gabriela Mistral, Santiago, “La Rivoluzione Silenziosa degli angeli apocrifi”, Galleria del Tasso, Bergamo, Italia (2009), “Los Coros Menores” (2011), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago, “Los Tíos del Diablo” (2013), “La Ciudad Posterior” (2013) Centro de Extensión del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y Las Artes, Valparaíso, y “La Nave” en 2015 en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes en Santiago de Chile. Ha participado en más de 40 exposiciones colectivas en galerías, museos y bienales en Chile y en el exterior. Destacan: III Bienal del Mercosur (2002), así como muestras en Spazio Oberdan (Milán, 2009), el Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien (Berlín, 2012), el MEIAC (Badajoz, 2012) y la National Gallery (Auckland, 2016). En el ámbito académico, Schopf cuenta con más de 70 publicaciones en libros, catálogos y revistas indexadas. En 2013 realizó una residencia en el Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) en Karlsruhe, Alemania y entre 2002 y 2004 una pasantía en la Kunsthochschule für Medien (KHM) en Colonia (con beca DAAD).
