  1. a) Art Themes: This section includes reviewed articles (blind peer review) on various topics related to contemporary art and discussed from different approaches such as research-artistic creation, art history, visual studies, visual anthropology, or sociology. Articles in this section are accepted only within the deadlines established in the call.

  1. c) Visual essay: This section includes artistic or photographic visual essays. These articles are not peer reviewed and are commissioned to the authors by the publisher.

  1. d) Dialogues: This section is open to dialogues between artists, curators and journalists who deal with different topics of interest in contemporary art. This section is not peer reviewed and is published at the Editor’s judgment.

Submission Policy

The publisher and editors of this journal accept articles related to our attention areas. We uphold the highest standards of scholarship and integrity, and we expect all authors to adhere to these standards.

  1. Scope: Our areas include research-based artistic creation, art and education, art history, art criticism, publication reviews, artist reviews, art collecting and the art market, art and new media, aesthetic thinking, visual studies and photographic visual essay. Articles must be original and not previously published or currently under review in publication elsewhere.
  2. Submission Guidelines: Authors should carefully review the submission guidelines provided on our website before presenting their articles. This includes information about the format, length, and the types of articles that we accept. Submissions that do not meet these guidelines may be returned to the author without review.
  3. Peer Review: All articles submitted to this journal will be subject to a rigorous peer-review process. Reviewers will evaluate the quality of the research and writing, and may provide feedback on the methodological approach used by the author. We aim to provide authors with constructive feedback to help them improve their work.
  4. Acceptance: Acceptance of an article for publication is based on the quality of the research and writing, and is at the discretion of the editor and the result of the review process. The editor may also request revisions to the article before it can be accepted for publication.
  5. Publication Fees: This journal does not charge authors any publication fees or article processing charges.

Open Access and Payment Policy

Índex, Revista de Arte contemporáneo, has an open access policy. All articles are available for reading free of charge and immediately after publication. These articles can be printed, quoted, and shared citing the source. This policy seeks a fair development of Latin American societies and in the global region, through knowledge produced in research free exchange. All our articles can be redistributed under the terms of the Creative Commons 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0).

Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, does not charge any monetary value for the submission, review, or publication of any article.

Review Policy

This journal is evaluated under the academic peer evaluation system, and through the blind peer review modality, which guarantees the confidentiality of authors and referees. The approximate time between the receipt of articles and their publication is 60 days.

The review process is as follows:

  1. The author sends his proposal through the journal's registration system, within the deadlines established in the biannual call for papers, this does not imply at any time a payment by the author. The submission must be written in accordance with the publication rules of the journal, and the author must accept the conditions of the Creative Commons License, Non-Commercial Attribution 4.0.
  2. The submission is reviewed in the first instance by the Editor. It is reviewed if the article agrees with the journal's publication standards and if the suggested topic is coherent with the publication. The Editor is free to reject articles that do not meet these basic guidelines or that are considered poor in their conceptual proposal.
  3. Review articles (Art Themes and Dossier sections) are sent to peer readers with a blind peer review system. The deadline for reading and announcing the verdicts, through an evaluation rubric, is about 15 working days. In the verdict, the reviewer can establish that the text is: Accepted, accepted with minor modifications, accepted with major modifications, and must be re-evaluated, and finally rejected. In all cases, the decision must be communicated to the author. The evaluator's decision can be appealed by means of an argued letter explaining the reasons for the appeal. If accepted, a new revision will be managed with another peer reader.
  4. The deadlines defined for the articles' modifications are minor modifications, 15 days, major modifications and being re-evaluated, 40 days. The re-evaluation must be given within a period not exceeding 20 days.
  5. Articles from the Reviews, Dialogues, Curatorial and Visual Essay sections are reviewed by the Editor. The decision to publish depends on the quality, impact level and relevance of the contribution to local and regional field of visual arts.
  6. Once the deadline for corrections, if any, is over, the articles are sent for style adjustments, XML markup and finally design.
  7. After this process, the Editor makes the decision to publish the article, notifying the authors. The articles are published in PDF and HTML format within the deadlines established by the call.

Research Process in Arts and Art Theory Policy

The publisher and editors of this journal recognize the importance of a rigorous methodological approach in researching and writing articles on visual arts and art theory. We try to sustain highest standards of scholarship and academic integrity, and we expect all authors to adhere to these standards.

  1. Methodological Approach: Authors are encouraged to use a rigorous methodological approach in their research and writing. This may involve the use of proper research methods, critical analysis, and a clear theoretical framework. Authors must be transparent in the description of the methods used in their research and must provide a clear explanation of their theoretical framework.
  2. Citation and Credit: Authors must properly cite and attribute the sources used in their research. This includes primary sources (artwork or other visual materials) and secondary sources (books, articles, or other scholarly works). Authors must provide a clear explanation of how these sources have been used in their research and how they support their arguments.
  3. Transparency and reliability: Authors should use clear and concise language, logically structured arguments, and grammatically correct writing.
  4. Peer Review: All articles submitted to this journal will be part of a rigorous peer review process. Reviewers will assess the quality of the research and writing and may provide feedback on the methodological approach used by the author.

Retraction and Correction Policy

Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo is committed to publishing high-quality original research that is accurate and reliable. However, it may be necessary to retract or correct an article if inaccuracies or problems are discovered. This guideline guarantees transparency and equity in this process:

  1. Retraction: Articles may be withdrawn if they contain significant mistakes or inaccuracies, or if the research was conducted in an unethical or dishonest way. Retracted articles will be marked as such with an explanation for the retraction.
  2. Correction: Articles may be corrected if minor errors or inaccuracies that do not affect the conclusions of the investigation are discovered. Corrections will be marked as such with an explanation and the corrected information.
  3. Investigation: All requests for retraction or correction will be thoroughly investigated by the journal's editorial board. The author(s) of the article will be contacted and given the opportunity to reply to the request.
  4. Notification: If the journal decides to retract or correct an article, the author(s) and any pertinent institution or organization will be informed.
  5. Prevention: To prevent future errors or ethical issues, the journal is constantly improving the peer review process.

Research Misconduct Policy

The publisher and editors of this journal are committed to its integrity and the accuracy of the research. To prevent publishing articles written with research misconduct, we have established these guidelines:

  1. Definition of Research Misconduct: Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to, fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or any other serious breaches of research ethics. The journal follows the guidelines of the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE) to define and investigate research misconduct.
  2. Reporting Research Misconduct: If the editor(s) suspect that research misconduct has occurred, they will immediately investigate the matter. Anyone who suspects research misconduct should report it to the editor or editors immediately.
  3. Identification of Research Misconduct: The journal will take any needed action to identify research misconduct, including the use of plagiarism detection software, fact and source verification, and the requirement of authors to provide raw data and research materials upon request.
  4. Prevention of articles with research misconduct: If research misconduct is found prior to publication, the journal will reject the article and may inform the author's institution and other relevant parties. If research misconduct is identified after publication, the journal may retract the article and issue a notice of retraction.
  5. Whistleblower Protection: The journal is committed to protecting the confidentiality of those who report research misconduct. Whistleblowers will not be subject to retaliation or discrimination.
  6. Apologies: If an author violates research ethics o if the journal does so, the publisher and editors will issue an apology. The apology will be posted prominently and linked to the original article.

Complaints and claims policy

Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, will solve all complaints and claims arising from the publication process within 30 days. These should be addressed to the editor's email, through an email. The Editor will review each case, seeking to establish causes and solutions.

Originality verification policy

All articles accepted by Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo are submitted to the Turnitin anti-plagiarism software. This system generates a report that shows the proportion of similarity of the article, comparing it to other texts found online on the Internet. This report is analyzed and if plagiarism is detected, the article is automatically rejected.

Copyright Policy

Index, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, handles its rights under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 license. That is, you are free to share and copy the text in any medium and format. It can be adapted, remixed, transformed and built from the article. This, only if the proper credit is given to the author and source. It is not allowed to the article published for any commercial purposes.

Authorship rights are the inalienable property of the authors, and they are the unrestricted owners of their intellectual property rights.

Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, does not handle any temporary embargo on published articles. We encourage our readers community to help us distributing the articles, hoping that knowledge about arts can reach different audiences around the region and the world.

Archive Policy

This magazine uses some systems and methods to preserve its archive:

  • Índex, Revista de Arte contemporáneo, works with Open Journal Systems as its content and editorial flow manager. It works with the OAI-PHM interoperability protocol, which allows easy sharing of metadata between different files and indexes.
  • From the OJS magazine platform, we work with LOCKSS, creating a storage and distribution system among the sharing libraries. This allows the creation of a permanent archive in the journal for conservation and restoration purposes.
  • Works with the CrossRef platform, generating a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for each of its articles. The purpose is crossing information through the metadata of the article through the internet.
  • Additionally, Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, is part of the SciELO-Ecuador index, which houses the articles of each issue of the journal, archiving the authors’ intellectual production.
  • The operating system (Linux) where Índex, Revista de Arte Contemporáneo, is hosted, allows periodic backups of the magazine's contents, avoiding losses due to server cyber-attacks.

Research Misconduct Prevention Policy

To prevent research misconduct from occurring, we have established the following guidelines:

  1. Training: The journal will provide training to its editorial staff, authors, and reviewers on research ethics, including responsible conduct of research, proper citation and attribution, and prevention of plagiarism.
  2. Editorial Oversight: The journal editorial board will oversee the review process to ensure that it is fair, impartial, and free of conflicts of interest. Editors will also check manuscripts for potential research misconduct, such as data fabrication or falsification.
  3. Investigation of Complaints: If the editor(s) receive claims of research misconduct, they will investigate the matter and act, including notifying relevant parties and retracting or correcting the articles if necessary.
  4. Prevention of Retaliation: The journal will prevent retaliation against those who report research misconduct by maintaining confidentiality and protecting whistleblowers.
  5. Misconduct Prohibited: In no case will the editor or editors encourage, condone, or knowingly allow research misconduct. The journal will work to prevent and detect research misconduct and will act if it is identified.
